Boxing Hand Wraps FAQs

Do I need hand wraps for boxing?

Yes — hand wraps are essential for boxing training and should always be worn under your gloves. They stabilise your wrists, protect your knuckles and support the small bones and tendons in your hands during impact. Training without hand wraps significantly increases the risk of wrist and hand injuries, even with well-padded gloves. Most gyms require hand wraps for all bag, pad and sparring sessions.

How do I wrap my hands for boxing?

To wrap your hands, start by looping the thumb hole over your thumb, then wrap around your wrist 3–4 times for support. Next, wrap across the back of your hand and around your knuckles 3–4 times. Then wrap between each finger to separate and protect them. Finally, wrap back around the wrist and secure with the velcro fastening. There are many wrapping techniques — ask your coach to show you the method preferred at your gym.

What is the difference between traditional hand wraps and quick wraps?

Traditional hand wraps are long strips of cotton or elasticated fabric that you wind around your hands and wrists. They take a little practice to apply correctly but provide the most customisable level of support and protection. Quick wraps are pre-shaped inner gloves with built-in padding that slip on in seconds — ideal for fitness boxing and bag work where speed of preparation is a priority. Most serious boxers use traditional wraps for sparring and competition.

How long should boxing hand wraps be?

For most adults, 4.5m–5m hand wraps provide enough length to wrap the wrists, knuckles and fingers properly. Shorter wraps (3.5m) are suitable for smaller hands or those who prefer a simpler wrap. Junior wraps are available in shorter lengths for children. If you are unsure, opt for a longer wrap — any excess can simply be wrapped around the wrist for extra support.
