Karate Clothing & Equipment

Karate first began as a common system of fighting known as te. This early form of martial arts was first developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom under the influence of Chinese martial arts. Karate can now be seen as primarily the art of striking using punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes as well as other open-handed techniques. A student of karate can be referred to as a karateka. The martial arts uniform worn is known as a karate gi (keikogi or dogi) which can weigh between 7oz and 16oz. The main types of karate which can be learnt in dojos and clubs today can be seen as having being derived from Gichin Funakoshi, they are Shotokan-ryu, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu & Shito-ryu.

Karate sparring is known as kumite whose literal translation is "meeting of hands." This form of self-defense training can include using karate mitts, pads and shin guards and also the makiwara. The karate makiwara is a pad used to develop strikes by providing resistance to kicks and punches.
