Judo Suits & Equipment

As a beginner, the essential judo equipment is a judo gi (suit) and a white belt. A lightweight club gi such as the Cimac or Owari beginner suit is ideal for starting out — affordable, durable and comfortable for regular training. As you progress you may also want a kit bag to carry your equipment and coloured belts as you grade through the ranks.

Judo gi weight refers to the fabric weight in grams per square metre (GSM). Lighter gi (around 350g) are ideal for beginners and regular club training — they are breathable, easy to wash and comfortable for long sessions. Heavier gi (500g–990g) are stiffer and more durable, preferred for competition as they are harder for opponents to grip. Most serious judoka own both a training gi and a heavier competition gi.
