Karate first began as a common system of fighting known as te. This early form of martial arts was first developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom with influence from Chinese martial arts. Karate sparring is known as kumite whose literal translation is "meeting of hands." This form of self-defense training can include using karate mitts, pads and shin guards.
