Taekwondo Dobok Buying Guide — How to Choose the Right Taekwondo Uniform

Whether you're buying your first taekwondo dobok or upgrading to a competition uniform, this guide covers everything you need to know — WT approval, fabric, fit, sizing and which brands to consider.

What is a Dobok?

A dobok is the traditional uniform worn for taekwondo training and competition. It consists of a jacket (jeogori), trousers (baji) and a belt (tti). Unlike karate gi, taekwondo doboks are typically lighter and cut for greater leg mobility — essential for the high kicks that define the sport.

World Taekwondo (WT) Approval — Do I Need It?

If you plan to compete in World Taekwondo (WT) sanctioned events — including the Olympics, World Championships and most national federation competitions — you'll need a WT-approved dobok. WT-approved doboks meet strict specifications for fabric, construction and fit.

For club training and non-WT competitions, approval isn't required. Most quality doboks from reputable brands will be suitable for club use regardless of approval status.

Types of Taekwondo Dobok

V-Neck Dobok

The traditional style — a V-shaped neckline on the jacket. Associated with the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) style and traditional taekwondo. Still widely used at club level across all styles.

Wrap-Around Dobok

The modern competition style used in WT taekwondo. The jacket wraps across the front and is secured with ties. Required for WT competition. Most modern doboks you'll find are this style.

Dobok Fabric & Weight

  • Polyester — Lightweight, fast-drying and easy to care for. The most common fabric for modern doboks. Excellent for training and competition.
  • Cotton / Polycotton — More traditional feel, slightly heavier. Less common in modern competition doboks but still used for club training.
  • Mesh ventilation panels — Many modern doboks include mesh panels under the arms and on the back for improved airflow during intense training.

How Should a Taekwondo Dobok Fit?

A dobok should allow full freedom of movement for high kicks, jumping kicks and fast footwork. WT rules specify minimum sleeve and trouser lengths for competition.

  • Jacket: Should reach the hip bone. Sleeves should reach the wrist.
  • Trousers: Should reach the ankle. Wide cut to allow full leg extension.
  • Fit: Loose enough for unrestricted kicking — not so baggy it looks untidy.

Taekwondo Dobok Sizing

Doboks are typically sized by height in centimetres or by a number system. Sizing varies between brands — always check the specific size chart.

  • 100–130cm — Young juniors
  • 130–150cm — Older juniors
  • 150–160cm — Smaller adults / older juniors
  • 160–170cm — Average adult
  • 170–180cm — Taller adult
  • 180cm+ — Large / tall adult

If you're between sizes, consider your build — broader practitioners should size up for jacket width, taller practitioners for sleeve and trouser length.

Which Taekwondo Dobok Brand Should I Choose?

Adidas

Adidas are the leading brand for WT-approved taekwondo doboks. Their range covers every level:

  • Adidas Adistart — Lightweight entry-level dobok with white belt included. Ideal for beginners.
  • Adidas WT Club — WT-approved lightweight ribbed fabric dobok for regular training.
  • Adidas Champion III — Top-of-the-range WT-approved dobok with ClimaCool ventilation. Used by elite competitors.
  • Adidas AdiFighter — Made from recycled Primegreen polyester. WT-approved and sustainably produced.

What Else Do I Need for Taekwondo?

  • Belt — Usually included with beginner doboks. Your belt colour reflects your grade.
  • Sparring equipment — WT competition requires approved hogu (chest protector), helmet, gloves, shin guards, forearm guards and groin guard. Check with your club for specific requirements.
  • Taekwondo shoes — Lightweight shoes designed for the mat. Optional for training but useful for competitions held on hard floors.
  • Mouthguard — Recommended for sparring.

Caring for Your Dobok

  • Wash after every session — doboks absorb significant sweat during training
  • Wash at 30°C to preserve fabric and prevent shrinkage
  • Air dry rather than tumble dry — tumble drying can cause shrinkage and fabric damage
  • White doboks can be washed with a colour-safe whitener to maintain brightness

Summary — Choosing the Right Taekwondo Dobok

  • Beginners / juniors: Adidas Adistart with white belt included — lightweight and great value
  • Regular club training: Adidas WT Club — WT-approved, durable and comfortable
  • Competition: Adidas Champion III or AdiFighter — WT-approved, competition-ready
