Karate Equipment for Every Level — Gi, Belts, Pads & More

Karate originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom, evolving from an early striking system known as te with influence from Chinese martial arts. Today it encompasses punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes, open-hand techniques and grappling elements. The four most popular styles are Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Wado-ryu and Shito-ryu. The karate gi ranges from 7oz to 16oz depending on discipline — kumite practitioners favour lighter suits for speed, while kata competitors prefer heavier, structured gi for presentation.

Karate Equipment FAQs

What karate equipment do I need as a beginner?

As a beginner, the essential karate equipment is a karate gi (suit) and a white belt. A lightweight beginner gi from Cimac or Owari is ideal for starting out — affordable, durable and comfortable for regular training. As you progress into sparring, you will also need kumite mitts, shin guards and a gumshield. Check with your club for their specific equipment requirements.

What is the difference between kumite and kata karate gi?

Kumite gi are lightweight (typically 7oz–8oz) and designed for speed and freedom of movement during sparring. Kata gi are heavier (12oz–16oz) and more structured, designed to make a strong visual impression during performance. Some karateka own both — a lighter gi for kumite training and a heavier, smarter gi for kata competition. Check individual product listings for weight and style details.

Do you stock WKF-approved karate equipment?

Yes — we stock WKF-approved karate gi and competition equipment from Adidas, suitable for use in World Karate Federation sanctioned events. WKF-approved gi and protection meet the strict standards required for official competition. Check individual product listings for WKF approval status before purchasing.

Which karate brands do you stock?

We stock karate equipment from Adidas, Owari and Cimac. Adidas is the leading brand for WKF-approved competition karate gi and protection. Owari offers premium uniforms with a traditional Japanese feel, popular with kata practitioners. Cimac provides great value training suits and protection for beginners and regular club use.
