What Do I Need to Start Taekwondo?
Starting taekwondo doesn't require a huge investment upfront. Most clubs will ask you to train in comfortable sportswear for the first few sessions before committing to a uniform. Once you're ready to buy, here's what you need.
Step 1: The Dobok (Uniform)
Your first purchase should be a dobok. For beginners, we recommend:
- Kids — Adidas Kids V-Neck Dobok with White Belt or Adidas Kids WT Approved Dobok with White Belt — both include a white belt
- Adults — Adidas WT Approved Dobok with White Belt or Adidas Adult V-Neck Dobok with Belt
Check with your instructor whether your club uses V-neck or round-neck doboks before ordering.
Step 2: Basic Sparring Protection
Most clubs won't require full sparring gear until you start light contact work — usually after a few months. When the time comes, start with:
- Gum shield — T-Sport Gum Shield — essential from your first sparring session
- Groin guard (males) — Cimac Groin Guard
- Head guard — Cimac Dipped Foam Head Guard for club training
- Foot guards — Cimac Super Safety Foot Guards
- Shin guards — Cimac Shin Guards
Step 3: A Kit Bag
Once your kit starts to grow, you'll need a bag to carry it all. The adidas Combat Sports Backpack is ideal for beginners, while the Cimac Daddy XL Holdall suits practitioners with a full sparring kit.
When to Upgrade to WT Approved Gear
If you start competing in World Taekwondo events, you'll need to upgrade to WT approved sparring protection. See our WT Approved Equipment Guide for full details.
