What Sparring Equipment Do I Need for Taekwondo?
Taekwondo sparring (kyorugi) requires a full set of protective equipment. The exact requirements depend on whether you are training at club level or competing in World Taekwondo (WT) events.
Essential Sparring Protection
Head Guard
A head guard is mandatory for sparring at all levels. For WT competition, it must be WT approved. The adidas WT Approved Head Guard is the standard choice, while the adidas WT Head Guard with Mask provides additional face protection.
For club training, the Cimac Dipped Foam Head Guard is a cost-effective option.
Chest Protector (Hogu)
The hogu (chest protector) is the most distinctive piece of taekwondo sparring equipment. For WT competition, the adidas WT Body Armour Chest Protector is required.
Shin Guards
Shin guards protect both the shin and instep during kicking exchanges. For WT competition: adidas WT Shin Guards. For club training: Cimac Martial Arts Shin Guards.
Foot Protection
WT competition requires adidas WT Foot Protection Socks. For club sparring, Cimac Super Safety Foot Guards or Cimac Dipped Foam Foot Guards are popular choices.
Gloves
For WT competition: adidas WT Fighter Gloves. For club training: Cimac Super Safety Gloves or adidas Pro Semi Contact Gloves.
Forearm Guards
Required for WT competition: adidas WT Forearm Protectors.
Groin Guard
Mandatory for male competitors. WT approved: adidas WT Groin Guard. For club training: Cimac Groin Guard.
Gum Shield
Strongly recommended for all sparring. See our T-Sport Gum Shield.
Club Training vs WT Competition — Quick Summary
