How to Choose a Taekwondo Dobok — Complete UK Guide

How to Choose a Taekwondo Dobok — Complete UK Guide

What is a Taekwondo Dobok?

A dobok is the official uniform worn for taekwondo training and competition. Unlike a karate gi, the dobok typically features a V-neck jacket (for coloured belts and above in World Taekwondo) or a round-neck jacket (for beginners and some club styles). The trousers are usually elasticated and cut for high kicks.

V-Neck vs Round-Neck Dobok

This is the most common question for new practitioners:

  • Round-neck dobok — traditionally worn by white belts and beginners. Some clubs use round-neck for all grades.
  • V-neck dobok — the standard for coloured belts and above in World Taekwondo (WT) affiliated clubs. Required for WT competition.

Always check with your instructor which style your club requires before purchasing.

Do I Need a WT Approved Dobok?

If you train at a World Taekwondo (WT) affiliated club or plan to compete in WT events, you will need a WT approved dobok. WT approved doboks carry the official World Taekwondo logo and meet the organisation's standards for competition use.

For club training only, a non-approved dobok is perfectly acceptable — and often more affordable.

Dobok Weight & Fabric

Most doboks are made from lightweight polyester or polycotton, typically in the 180–220g range. Unlike karate gi, heavyweight doboks are not common in taekwondo — the emphasis is on freedom of movement for high kicks and fast footwork.

  • 100% polyester — lightweight, fast-drying, ideal for competition
  • Polycotton — slightly heavier, more durable for regular club training

Dobok Sizing

Taekwondo doboks are sized by height in centimetres. Always measure your child's or your own height and refer to the size guide on each product — do not use age as a guide as sizing varies significantly between brands.

As a general rule, if your child is between sizes, size up — doboks can be taken in but cannot be let out.
