How to Choose a Karate Gi — Complete UK Guide
Choosing the right karate gi can feel overwhelming with so many options available — different weights, cuts, brands and price points. This guide breaks it all down so you can find the right suit for your style, grade and budget.
What is a Karate Gi?
A karate gi (also called a karate suit or karate uniform) is the traditional training uniform worn in karate. It consists of a jacket (uwagi), trousers (zubon) and a belt (obi). Most gi are white, though black gi are used in some styles and clubs.
Karate Gi Weight — Which is Right for You?
The weight of a karate gi is measured in ounces (oz) and refers to the fabric weight. It's one of the most important factors in choosing the right suit.
- 7oz–8oz (Lightweight) — Ideal for beginners and everyday club training. Lightweight, breathable and easy to move in. The Cimac 7oz and 8oz gi are popular choices for new students.
- 10oz–12oz (Middleweight) — A good all-rounder for intermediate students who train regularly and want more durability.
- 14oz (Heavyweight) — Tournament-grade gi used by kata competitors. The heavier fabric gives the crisp, structured appearance required at competition level. Available in European and Japanese cuts.
Karate Gi Cut — European vs Japanese
Heavyweight kata gi are available in two cuts:
- European cut — Standard fit with full-length sleeves and trousers. The most common cut for club and competition use.
- Japanese cut — Features shorter sleeves and trouser legs in the traditional Japanese style. Preferred by some kata competitors for its distinctive appearance.
Kumite Gi — Lightweight Competition Suits
For kumite (sparring) competitors, a specialist kumite gi is essential. These are ultra-lightweight — often under 7oz — and WKF approved for competition use. The Adidas AdiZero and K150 kumite gi are among the most popular choices at competition level.
Kids vs Adult Karate Gi
Karate gi are sized by height in centimetres. Kids karate gi typically start from 100cm and go up to around 160cm, while adult gi range from 150cm to 200cm. Many beginner suits for children come with a free white belt included.
Which Brand Should I Choose?
- Adidas — The premium choice for serious competitors. WKF-approved competition gi trusted by karateka worldwide. Higher price point but exceptional quality and durability.
- Owari — Premium karate uniforms with a traditional Japanese feel. Excellent quality at a mid-range price.
- Cimac — Great value training suits and protection for beginners and regular club use. The most affordable option without compromising on quality for training.
Do I Need a WKF Approved Gi?
Only if you compete at WKF-sanctioned events. For club training and most local competitions, any good quality gi is perfectly acceptable. WKF approval is specifically required for World Karate Federation competitions and many national-level events. Look for the WKF Approved badge on product listings.
Karate Gi Size Guide
Karate gi are sized by height, not clothing size. Measure your height in centimetres and match it to the size on the product listing. If you are between sizes, size up for comfort. For kata gi, some competitors prefer a slightly longer fit for presentation purposes.
