What Equipment Do You Need to Start Karate? (UK Beginner Guide)

What Equipment Do You Need to Start Karate? (UK Beginner Guide)

Introduction

Starting Karate is exciting, but many parents and new students aren’t sure what equipment is actually required.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get ready for your first class with confidence.

To make things simple, we’ve created a dedicated Karate Starter Kit collection featuring our best-value beginner Judo suits, belts and essential equipment — all in one place.

1️⃣ Karate Gi (Karate Suit)

The most important item is your Karate gi — the traditional uniform worn during training.

For beginners, we recommend a lightweight Karate suit (6–8oz) which is comfortable and allows full movement.

Karate suits are sized by height in centimetres. If you’re between sizes, sizing up slightly is often the safest option.

2️⃣ White Belt

Beginners start with a white belt.

Many Karate suits include a white belt, but always check the product description before ordering.

3️⃣ Protective Equipment

Some clubs require:

  • Karate mitts

  • Shin guards

  • Gumshield

Check with your instructor if you’re unsure.

4️⃣ Training Bag

A simple holdall makes it easier to carry:

  • Karate gi

  • Belt

  • Water bottle

  • Towel
