WKF Approved Karate Gi — What You Need to Know

WKF Approved Karate Gi — What You Need to Know

WKF Approved Karate Gi — What You Need to Know

If you compete in karate or are planning to, you may have seen the term “WKF Approved” on gi listings. But what does it actually mean, and do you need one? This guide explains everything.

What is the WKF?

The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the international governing body for sport karate and the only karate organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee. WKF rules govern competition at World Championships, European Championships and many national-level events.

What Does WKF Approved Mean?

WKF approval means a karate gi has been tested and certified to meet the World Karate Federation’s technical specifications for competition use. These specifications cover fabric weight, construction, cut, colour and labelling. Only gi that meet these standards can be worn at WKF-sanctioned competitions.

WKF Rules for Kumite Gi

For kumite (sparring) competition, the WKF requires:

  • White gi without stripes or personal embroidery (other than manufacturer’s logo)
  • Jacket must cover the hips and be tied at the waist
  • Sleeves must not be rolled up
  • One competitor wears a red belt/tag, the other blue — some WKF-approved gi come in red/blue sets
  • The gi must carry the WKF approval label

Popular WKF-approved kumite gi include the Adidas AdiZero, K150 and DNA WKF — all stocked at Budo Online.

WKF Rules for Kata Gi

For kata competition, the WKF requires:

  • White gi — heavyweight 14oz suits are standard at competition level
  • No embroidery other than the manufacturer’s logo
  • Clean, pressed appearance — the structured look of a heavyweight gi is important for presentation
  • Available in European and Japanese cuts — both are permitted

Browse our WKF-approved kata gi including the Adidas WKF 14oz Japanese Cut and Cimac Tournament Heavyweight.

Do I Need a WKF Approved Gi?

Only if you compete at WKF-sanctioned events. For club training, gradings and most local competitions, any good quality gi is perfectly acceptable. Check with your club or competition organiser if you are unsure whether WKF approval is required for your event.

How to Identify a WKF Approved Gi
