🥋 Judo Gear Checklist for Beginners (UK Guide)

🥋 Judo Gear Checklist for Beginners (UK Guide)

What Does My Child Need for Their First Judo Class?

Starting Judo is exciting — but many parents aren’t sure what equipment is actually required.

Here’s a simple UK-focused Judo gear checklist to help you get started with confidence.

To make things simple, we’ve created a dedicated Judo Starter Kit collection featuring our best-value beginner Judo suits, belts and essential equipment — all in one place.

👉 View the full Judo Starter Kit here.

1️⃣ Judo Gi (Judo Suit)

The most important item is the Judo gi (also called a Judo suit or Judo uniform).

For beginners, a lightweight 250–450g Judo suit is usually ideal. It’s comfortable, durable and perfect for training.

Judo suits are sized by height in centimetres. For example, if your child is 135cm tall, a 140cm suit is typically the right choice.

👉 Tip: If between sizes, consider sizing up slightly to allow room for growth.

2️⃣ Judo Belt (Obi)

Beginners start with a white belt.

Many beginner Judo suits include a white belt, but not all competition models do — always check the product details before ordering.

As your child progresses, they’ll earn new belt colours through grading.

3️⃣ Zori (Dojo Sandals)

Zori are simple slip-on sandals worn around the edge of the mat.

They help:

  • Keep feet clean

  • Protect against infections

  • Follow proper dojo etiquette

Most clubs expect students to bring them.

4️⃣ Mouthguard (Optional but Recommended)

Some clubs recommend a mouthguard for sparring.

Even if not mandatory, it’s a good safety addition — especially for older children or competition training.

5️⃣ Judo Holdall or Kit Bag

A sturdy bag makes carrying:

  • Judo gi

  • Belt

  • Water bottle

  • Towel

Much easier for young students.

🎯 Beginner vs Competition Judo Suits

Not sure which type to buy?

  • Lightweight (350–450g) → Best for beginners and younger children

  • Heavier (500g+) → More durable, preferred for regular training and grading

If your club has specific requirements, check with the instructor first.
